11th May: Total Panic - the forester called me at 09:00 - not another Grade 1 Listed Nesting Bird - no just to check that everything is OK. Phew! Best behaviour please as foresters will be visiting us (probably Sunday)
9th May: Updated day 1 details (although I can't tell what has changed!)
8th May: The weather is looking fair-to-ok (my brother in law is a meteorologist and he uses yr.no)
7th May: Please inform the organiser if you wish to attend the evening meal (Saturday). Please also check the Day 1 and Day 2 details (links are on the right). Start lists will be available from Thursday
25th April: Ken confirms that moving house prevents him attending this year - pressure is off for our senior competitors.
22nd April: Saturday Celebration Meal will be at Ye Olde Windmill, Gentleshaw (details below)
We need a "guardian" for Sunday to guard things while David W is off running the start - making sure the finish control and tent-with-computers does not go walkabout - will you have any supporters with you who could help us with this?

The RSGB are hosting two* days of open ARDF competition in the spring of 2012. There will be 2m and 80m Classic ARDF Courses
*It is the Queen's Jubilee so our traditional end of May public holiday is not available. In addition the 8th British ARDF Championships will be contested.  The events will be located in Staffordshire, close to Birmingham, East Midlands and Manchester Airports. We are taking expressions of interest and even entries. Please register your interest now by emailing the organiser on...  Given Name, Family Name, Callsign, Club/Association, Country, SI Chip Number or "hire" if you wish to borrow a chip for the event, class entered and days entered. If you wish to borrow receivers - either 2m or 80m - please let us know now - we have a limited number of each. Entry fees will be collected on the morning of the competition. |
The Competitions
Please note: There may be changes following site visits and signal propagation/radio interference checks
Competition terrain is mainly wooded area with an extensive path network with spurs, reentrants and some steep slopes. At this time of year the bracken is down, making the area fast under foot. This is our first visit to The Chase for ARDF but it has previously been used for the British Orienteering Championships and a number of international orienteering competitions.
Day 2 - Sunday 13th May - Classic Style ARDF on the 2m band
Again Cannock Chase - but with differing start and/or finish locations.
The Location
Travel
By road Cannock Chase is 40 minutes from Birmingham Airport (BHX) and 55 minutes from East Midlands Airport (EMA)
It is possible to get to the venue by public transport - a bit of walking or cycling will be necessary however. Use the UK Transport Planner to check out possibilities.
As is standard practice in the UK competitors will be responsible for their own transport
Given prior notice we may be able to organise transport to and from the competition forests to local hotels or rail/bus stations. This is not guaranteed. Please contact the organiser to discuss well in advance of the event.
Accommodation
As is standard GB practice competitors will be responsible for their own accomodation arrangements.
There are plenty of hotels! Chains such as PREMIER INN, TRAVELODGE offer good deals if you book early.
Lichfield is the best place to stay if you are an overseas visitor - certainly my American friends enjoyed their time in the town.

Entry fees will be payable, in Cash (GBP) and in full upon arrival at Day 1 registration.

Weather
(Information For Overseas Competitors)
The weather in May can vary between 25 degrees, dead calm and sun (hooray!) and 6 degrees, rain, sleet, hail and gale force winds (boo!).
Normally it is warm and sunny but please come prepared! If the weather is really bad the organisers may require competitors to carry a waterproof raincoat (aka cagoule)

In the case of cancellation or curtailment of the competition the organisers accept no liability for competitors personal committed or incurred costs. We reserve the right to retain all or part of any entry fee or other monies paid to cover organisers costs, in the case where these costs cannot be recovered.
